Endangered. Endemic to Hawaii island and known only from areas near Volcano Village and Laupahoehoe. In Hawaii, this genus hybridizes and also shows extreme variation, making identification difficult. Currently, 58 species have been recognized in the Hawaiian Islands and recent phylogenetic research suggests a single colonization (Cronk, Q.C.B., et al, Am. J. Bot. 92(60:1017-1024, 2005).
