Stems are much-branched, usually 30–90 cm long and hoary with closely appressed hairs or nearly glabrous. Leaves are greyish-green, minutely hairy or hairless, obovate, spathulate or narrowly ovate, more or less fleshy and 1–2 cm long; margins are coarsely toothed on their distal half. Flowerheads are axillary, spicate, usually at first capitate then later cylindrical, many-flowered; spikes 0.5–0.8 cm long at maturity. Petals are purple or pink to white; limb at first white, afterwards lilac with a darker dot, 2–3 mm across, the lower lip twice as long as the upper one and about half as long as the tube. Flowering is mostly from October to April. A native of tropical & subtropical regions, it is found in moist or wet areas, particularly on clay flood plains near rivers. A serious weed of inland wetland areas such as the Gwydir Wetland and Macquarie Marshes. Date: 27 November 2008, 06:33. Source: Phyla canescens habit2.
