A glabrous shrub or tree, up to 13 m. in height, with prickly branchlets ; leaves oddpinnate ; leaflets 3-9, opposite, short-petioluled, oblong-obovate or obovate, 5-8 cm. long, 2-3 cm. broad, short-acuminate, obtuse, rounded or sometimes subemarginate at the apex, narrowed at the base, lustrous above, less so beneath or dull, entire, coriaceous, subequilateral, the margin narrowly revolute ; glands of both surfaces more or less impressed, not pellucid, those of the margin larger ; petiole and rachis channeled, unarmed or bearing a few straight brownish prickles ; inflorescence terminal, paniculate ; staminate flowers : sepals 3, connate above the base, in aestivation triangular, coriaceous, 0.3-0.4 mm. long, the margin glabrous, entire ; petals 3, in aestivation a little imbricate, oval or ovate, rounded at the apex, 1.6 mm. long, 0.8-1 mm. broad, subcoriaceous, glabrous, 4-5 times as long as the calyx ; stamens 3 ; anthers subquadrate-ovate ; ovary rudimentary, conic, 3-grooved, obtuse at the apex or elongate-acuminate, entire ; stigma wanting ; pistillate flowers : gynoecium 1-carpellary ; ovary globose ; style long, oblique ; stigma capitate ; follicles solitary, sessile, apiculate, globose.
Type locality: In high mountains of Vuelta de Abajo, Cuba. Distribution : Andros ; Cuba.
