Cylindropuntia arbuscula forms hybrids with C. leptocaulis in south-central Arizona; those hybrids have narrow, obscurely tuberculate stems and reddish fruits nearly the size of those of C. arbuscula and chromosome number of 2n = 55. Hybrids between C. arbuscula and C. spinosior [= C . ×neoarbuscula (Griffiths) F. M. Knuth] have large green fruits, which often split open, and on stem segments distal areoles that usually bear three or four spines to 2.5 cm. Hybrids between C. arbuscula and C. versicolor [= C . ×vivipara (Rose) F. M. Knuth] have large green fruits, which often split open, and distal stem segment areoles that bear one or two spines to 1.5 cm.

Trees or shrubs, densely branched, 0.5-3 m. Stem segments green, sometimes purple tinged, 6-10.5 × 0.5-1.3 cm; tubercles narrowly elongate, appearing as wrinkles when dry, 1-2 cm; areoles circular, 2-3 mm in diam.; wool tan to brown, aging gray to black. Spines 0-2(-3) per areole, sparsely distributed along stem, usually deflexed, pale yellow or red-brown aging black, stout, the longest 0.8-3.5(-5) cm; sheaths loose fitting, yellowish brown. Glochids in adaxial tuft and marginal, encircling areole, pale yellow. Flowers: inner tepals green- or orange-bronze, spatulate, 17-20 mm, apiculate; filaments dark green-bronze; anthers yellow; style whitish basally to light orange apically; stigma lobes very pale green. Fruits green, becoming yellowish apically, sometimes tinged red to purplish at areoles, commonly sterile, then narrow, tuberculate, to 2.5 cm, fertile ones stipitate, obconic, 20-50 × 15-35 mm, fleshy, becoming smooth, spineless; umbilicus 3-4 mm deep; areoles 15-17(-34). Seeds pale yellow, angularly circular to oblong, thick, 3-5 mm diam., lumpy; girdle smooth, broad, not protruding. 2n = 66.

Fremdsprachige Trivialnamen sind „Branched Pencil Cholla“, „Bush Cholla“, „Chollita“, „Chumbera“, „Pencil Cholla“ und „Tasajo“.
Beschreibung
Cylindropuntia arbuscula wächst strauchig oder baumförmig, ist reich verzweigt und erreicht Wuchshöhen von 0,5 bis 3 Meter. Auf den grünen purpurfarben übertönten, 6 bis 10,5 Zentimeter langen und 0,5 bis 1,3 Zentimeter im Durchmesser messenden Triebabschnitten befinden sich schmale undeutliche Höcker. Die kreisrunden Areolen sind lohfarben bis braun bewollt und tragen hellgelbe Glochiden. Die bis zu drei Dornen, die auch fehlen können, befinden sich zerstreut entlang der Triebabschnitte. Sie sind kräftig, normalerweise abwärts gebogen, gelb bis rötlich braun und werden im Alter schwarz. Die Dornen sind 0,8 bis 8 Zentimeter lang. Ihre lose sitzenden Scheiden sind gelblich braun.
Die dunkel bronzefarbenen bis orange-bronzefarbenen Blüten erreichen Längen von 1,7 bis 2 Zentimeter. Die grünen bis gelben Früchte sind fleischig und nicht bedornt. Sie sind 2,5 bis 5 Zentimeter lang und erreichen Durchmesser von 1,5 bis 3,5 Zentimeter.
Verbreitung, Systematik und Gefährdung
Cylindropuntia arbuscula ist in den Vereinigten Staaten im Bundesstaat Arizona sowie in den mexikanischen Bundesstaaten Sinaloa und Sonora in der Sonora-Wüste bis in Höhenlagen von 1000 Metern verbreitet.
Die Erstbeschreibung als Opuntia arbuscula von George Engelmann wurde 1856 veröffentlicht.[1] Frederik Marcus Knuth stellte die Art 1936 in die Gattung Cylindropuntia.[2] Ein nomenklatorisches Synonym ist Grusonia arbuscula (Engelm.) G.D.Rowley (2006).
In der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten der IUCN wird die Art als „Least Concern (LC)“, d. h. als nicht gefährdet geführt. Die Entwicklung der Populationen wird auf Grund der großen Verbreitung einzelner Pflanzen als stabil angesehen.[3]

Descripción
C. arbuscula tiene un crecimiento arbustivo o en forma de árbol, ricamente ramificada, alcanza un tamaño de 0,5 a 3 metros de altura. Tiene areolas circulares que son de color marrón con gloquidios que tienen lana de color amarillo brillante y hasta tres espinas que también pueden estar ausentes. Se encuentran dispersas a lo largo del tallo. Son fuertes, generalmente dobladas hacia abajo, de color amarillo a marrón rojizo y negro con la edad. Las espinas miden 0,8 a 8 cm de largo y sus vainas sueltas son de color marrón amarillento. Las flores son de color bronce oscuro a naranja-bronce y alcanzan los 1,7 a 2 cm de longitud. Los frutos son de color verde a amarillo y son carnosos y sin espinas. Miden de 2,5 a 5 cm de largo y alcanzan diámetro de 1.5 a 3.5 cm.
Distribución
Es nativa de Norteamérica en México y Arizona donde se encuentra en el Desierto de Sonora.

Cylindropuntia: nombre genérico compuesto de cylindro = "cilíndrico" y opuntia, donde hace referencia a que las plantas son cilíndricas y similares a las del género Opuntia.
arbuscula: epíteto latino que significa "como un pequeño árbol".[4]
