This Japanese beetle was taking shelter from the rain inside a rose that it was probably chewing on for dinner. Their grubs live underground and eat lawn roots - as pretty as the beetles look like, they're considered serious garden pests.

My cherry tree is being defoliated by Japanese Beetles. They've been in the yard before, but never as bad as this year. The neighbor lot was sold off and cleared and is being mowed regularly now, so instead of an assortment of shrubs and bushes for wildlife (and beetles) to chew on, there's not much there any more. I guess the beetles have all moved to my yard now.

...making more Japanese Beetles while feeding on the chestnut flowers in my backyard. They may be pretty to look at, but they are serious garden pests and can skeletonize entire plants if they find them tasty.
