This species is characterized by the following: 18-20 pectoral fin rays with the dorsalmost unbranched rays abruptly longer than the ventralmost branched rays; snout elongated 13-15% SL; dorsal spines relatively elongated; body with distinct broad, orange or orange red vertical bars that extend onto the fins; short nasal spines, bifid or absent in some specimens; suborbital ridge with spines extended laterally to form a shelf; vertical scale rows 43-51 (Ref. 83997).
