Perennial, 30-90 cm. Rhizome with (?) stolons. Stem straight or base ascending, sharply trigonous, sides concave, scabrous or smooth. Leaves equalling or overtopping stem; sheaths 30-60 mm, brown, margin of scarious side concave; ligule 0.5-1 mm, brownish, arch much higher than wide; blades 3-6 mm wide, flat, margins revolute, scabrous towards apex. Inflorescence of 1 gynecandrous and 4-10 female spikes below. Bracts much overtopping inflorescence, sheath-less. Spikes 25-60 mm, cylindrical, overlapping, drooping, peduncles to 50 mm, lowest occasionally rebranching; male glumes c. 4.5 x 1.4 mm, obovate, truncate, with arista to 1.7 mm; female glumes c. 4.5 x 1.5 mm, truncate, with barbed arista to 2.5 mm, scarious; utricles c. 3.1 x 1.4 mm, ellipsoid or widely fusiform, bi-convex, with c. 0.4 mm stipe, yellowish-brown, densely papillose, beak c. 0.2 mm, cylindrical, truncate.
