Herbs annual, 20-50 cm tall. Stems erect, stout, much branched, strigose. Leaves alternate or subopposite; petiole 2-5 cm; leaf blade 3-9 × 2-4 cm, pubescent or strigose, base rounded or truncate, decurrent to petiole, margin undulate, apex acute; lateral veins 5-7 pairs. Cymes solitary, scorpioid, 5-15 cm, ebracteate. Flowers sessile, crowded. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 1.5-2 mm, strigose. Corolla light blue or blue-purple, salverform, 3-4 mm, base ca. 1 mm wide; throat contracted to ca. 0.5 mm; limb 2-2.5 mm wide; lobes rotund, ca. 1 mm wide, margin crispate. Anthers narrowly ovate, ca. 0.5 mm, inserted ca. 1 mm above base. Ovary glabrous. Style ca. 0.5 mm; stigma conical, pubescent. Fruit ribbed, 3-3.5 mm, glabrous or nearly so, deeply 2-cleft into mericarps each divided into 2 1-seeded pyrenes; mericarps longitudinally ribbed. Fl. and fr. Apr-Oct. 2n = 22, 24, 44, 64.

Erect annual or short-lived perennial herb, up to 150 cm. Leaves alternate to sub-opposite triangular-ovate, up to 17 cm long, upper surface wrinkled and with scattered bristles, somewhat more hairy below; base decurrent down the long petiole. Flowers in curled elongating inflorescences, eventually up to 36 cm long, white, rarely mauve or blue. Fruits deeply bilobed with diverging beaked lobes, c. 4 × 4 × 2.5 mm, almost hairless.

Heliotropium indicum, comúnmente conocíu como'l heliotropo indiu, ye una planta añal, arispia que ye una maleza común en llugares de refugaya y les zones poblaes. Ye orixinaria d'Asia.
Descripción
Ye una planta añal, erecta, ramificada que puede crecer hasta un altor d'unos 15 a 50 cm. Tien un tarmu velloso, teniendo alternando fueyes ovaes a oblongo-ovaes. Tien pequeñes flores blanques con una mota verde; cinco estames soportaos nun tubu de la corola; un estilu terminal; y un ovariu de cuatro lóbulos.[1]
Distribución
La planta ye orixinaria d'Asia. Una meruxa común en llugares de refugaya y les zones poblaes.[1]
Importancia económica
Nes Filipines, la planta utilízase principalmente como una melecina a base de yerbes. El zusmiu estrayíu de les fueyes machucaes de la planta utilizar pa curar feríes, úlceras de la piel y furúnculos. El zusmiu tamién s'utiliza como una gota ocular pa la conxuntivitis. Les fueyes machucaes utilícense como cataplasma.[2]

Heliotropium indicum contién alcaloides tumorígenos.[3]

Heliotropium indicum foi descritu por Carlos Linneo y espublizóse en Species Plantarum 1: 130. 1753.[4]

Heliotropium indicum)
Indian heliotrope is an annual, erect, branched plant that can grow to a height of about 15–50 cm (5.9–19.7 in). It has a hairy stem, bearing alternating ovate to oblong-ovate leaves. It has small white or purple flowers with a green calyx; five stamens borne on a corolla tube; a terminal style; and a four-lobed ovary.[1][2]
Distribution
The plant is native to Asia. A common weed in waste places and settled areas.[1]
Traditional medicine
In the Philippines, the plant is chiefly used as a traditional medicine. The extracted juice from the pounded leaves of the plants is used on wounds, skin ulcers and furuncles. The juice is also used as an eye drop for conjunctivitis. The pounded leaves are used as poultice.[3]
Toxicity
Heliotropium indicum contains tumorigenic pyrrolizidine alkaloids.[4]

Descriptio
Heliotropium indicum est planta annua, erecta, ramosa, hirsuta, quae ad 15 ad 50 cm crescere potest. Eae est caulis hirsutus, foliis alternis ovatis ad oblongis-ovatis. Flores sunt parvi et albi, calice viride, quinque staminibus in corolla tubulari latis, stylo terminali, et ovario quadrilobo.[1]

Descrição
É uma planta anual, ereta, ramificada, que pode crescer até uma altura de 15 a 50 cm. Tem uma haste pilosa, alternando as folhas ovaladas ou oblongas ovaladas. A inflorescência é em espigas terminais curvas ou curvadas. As flores são brancas com cálice verde, cinco estames suportados em um tubo da corola, um estilete terminal, e um ovário de quatro lóbulos..[2]

Medicina tradicional
A medicina tradicional das Filipinas utiliza o sumo extraído das folhas trituradas da planta para curar feridas, úlceras da pele e furúnculos. Gotas do sumo também são utilizadas para tratar a conjuntivite.[3] As folhas trituradas são utilizados como uma cataplasma.[4]
Na Nigéria se usa para tratar doenças como a úlcera e as febres.[5]
Os camponeses de assentamentos, entre os municípios de Jacobina e Várzea Nova (Bahia), usam o chá da erva para tratar o dengue, zika e chikungunya.[6]
Toxicidade
Heliotropium indicum contem vários alcaloides, entre eles pirrolizidínicos, que são hepatotóxicos.[7]

Vòi voi còn gọi là cẩu vĩ trùng, đại vĩ đạo, tên khoa học là Heliotropium indicum, thuộc họ Vòi voi (Borraginaceae). Tên cây đặt theo hình dạng dò hoa mọc ngồng lên như vòi con voi. Cây mọc hoang khắp miền nhiệt đới Á châu, dân gian thường dùng toàn cây, hái về phơi khô hoặc dùng tươi.
Mô tả
Vòi voi là loại cây thảo mộc mọc hoang, sống lâu năm, cao khoảng 25-40 cm. Thân cây khỏe, cứng, có nhiều lông nhám; lá hình bầu dục dài, nhăn nheo, mép lá có răng cưa. Hoa màu tím hoặc trắng, không có cuống, mọc xếp liền nhau thành 2 hàng dài.
Dược tính và độc tính
Theo sách Những cây thuốc và vị thuốc Việt Nam của cố Giáo sư Đỗ Tất Lợi, thì vòi voi có hai tác dụng chủ yếu là chống viêm, giảm đau. Tuy nhiên, hiện nay người ta đã phát hiện một số loài vòi voi như H.lariocarpum Fish et Mey chứa ancaloid có nhân pyrolizidinn rất độc đối với gan và gây hủy hoại tổ chức gan, đau bụng tiêu chảy, xuất huyết lan tỏa và có thể gây ung thư. Tính độc này thường không thể hiện ngay khi dùng, mà thường xuất hiện một cách âm ỉ, kéo dài, khó phát hiện. Vì vậy, Tổ chức Y tế thế giới khuyến cáo không nên dùng vòi voi làm thuốc...[1].
