Campylopus subfragilis Renauld & Cardot 1896

Plants small to medium-sized, up to 2 cm high, green or yellowish green, in shiny, tomentose tufts. Stems erect or ascending, brownish, comose foliate, simple or branched by proliferations from tips, the comal tufts often enclosing many perichaetia or crowded clusters of brood leaves. Leaves up to 7 mm long, erect or appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, lanceolate, falcate-secund, contracted at base, gradually to rather abruptly narrowed from an oblong-ovate base to a long, subtubulose acumen; margins plane and entire below, inflexed above, serrulate at the apex; costa light brownish, occupying ca. 2/3 the leaf base width, short- to long-excurrent, not ending in a hyaline point, smooth at back in the upper part, without clearly defined stereids in transverse section, dorsal cells with thick-walled and smaller lumina than the ventral cells to qualify as substereids; upper cells small, rhombic to rhomboidal, thick-walled; basal cells pale, irregularly rectangular, ca. 60 µm × 15 µm, becoming narrower and elongate at the margins; alar cells with a few cells not much inflated or bulging out, thick-walled, brownish. Dioicous. Mature sporophytes not seen.

Distribution: China, India and Nepal.

Habitat: on rotten wood.
