Pileus subfleshy, tough, broadly convex to nearly plane, often subumbonate, densely cespitose, 2-4 cm. broad; surface even, glabrous, reddish to tan, fading nearly to white in dried plants: lamellae rather close, narrow, adnexed, narrowed behind, white, sometimes reddishyellow in dried plants: spores 5-6 X 2.5-3 fi: stipe cartilaginous, even, hollow, smooth above,

bound together below by dense white mycelium, reddish to dark-red or almost black, 3-6 cm. long, 2-3 mm. thick.
Type IvOCality: Catskill Mountains, New York. Habitat: Upon decaying wood in forests. DisTRiBUTiOK: New York to Michigan.
