Usually a small deciduous tree, 3-4 m in height. Stems and branches often much twisted and contorted; bark dark grey rough and fissured. leaves imparipinnate with 5-11 alternate to subopposite leaflets; leaflets elliptic to obovate, 2.5-7 cm, leathery, dark green and hairless above, yellowish velvety below. Flowers in lax 2-10-flowered sprays, with one large white petal and a mass of orange yellow stamens, sweetly scented. Pod cylindric, up to 30 cm, dark brown to black when ripe, indehiscent.

Bobgunnia madagascariensis, tamién llamáu la planta de frijol culiebra,[1] ye una especie de lleguminosa na familia Fabaceae.

Descripción

Bobgunnia madagascariensis ye un pequeñu árbol de fueya caduca, qu'algama un tamañu de 3-4 m d'altor. La planta cunta con grandes vaines que se converten a escures cuando tán madures.[1]

Ecoloxía

Les canesbes de Abantis zambesiaca aliméntense de B. madagascariensis.

Tosicidá

Bobgunnia madagascarensis ye toxica.[2]

Preparando fleches venenoses

El venenu compuestu de les granes turraes de Bobgunnia madagascariensis y les coraes del escarabayu Diamphidia nigroornata aplicar a les fleches de los bosquimanos. Granes, frutos y corteza del tarmu tamién s'utilicen na pesca por envelenamientu n'África.[3]

Química

L'estractu metanólico del frutu de B. madagascariensis contién una tetraglycosida saponina.[4]

La corteza del raigañu de B. madagascariensis contién quinometano diterpenos[5]

La vaina de la grana contién dos saponinas acedes,[6] El rendimientu del estractu metanólico de la vaina ye altamente glicosilada flavonoides (glucósidos de kaempferol y quercetina)[7]

Los estractos de cloroformu y metanol crudu de la corteza del tarmu de la planta amuesen una fuerte actividá antialimentaria contra la plaga del productu almacenáu contra l'insectu del maíz Tribolium castaneum con dos compuestos, metilparabeno y lupeol, que fueron identificaos nestos estractos.[8]

Otros compuestos en S. madagascariensis son (-)-maackiain, (-)-medicarpin, gypsogenin 3-O-rhamnosylglucuronide, (-)-homopterocarpin, pterocarpin, 4-methoxymedicarpin, 4-methoxymaackiain, 4-methoxyhomopterocarpin, 4-methoxypterocarpin, anhydrovariabilin y coumestrol dimethyl ether.[9]

Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Bambara: samagara), also called the snake bean plant,[2] is a species of legume in the family Fabaceae.

Description

Bobgunnia madagascariensis is a small deciduous tree, 3–4 m tall. The plant has large pods that turn dark when ripe.[2]

Ecology

The larvae of Abantis zambesiaca feed on B. madagascariensis.

Toxicity

Bobgunnia madagascarensis is toxic.[3]

Applications

Preparing poison arrows

Poison composed of the roasted seeds of Bobgunnia madagascariensis and innards of the beetle Diamphidia nigroornata is applied to the arrows of the Bushmen. Seeds, fruits and stem bark are also used in fishing by poisoning in Africa.[4]

Chemistry

The methanolic extract of the fruit of B. madagascariensis contains a saponin tetraglycoside.[5]

The root bark of B. madagascariensis contains quinone methide diterpenes.[6]

The seed pod contains two acidic saponins, swartziasaponin A and B and swartziagenin, a mixture of oleanolic and O-acetyloleanolic acid.[7] The pod methanolic extract yields highly glycosylated flavonoids (glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin).[8]

The crude chloroform and methanol extracts of the stem bark of the plant show strong feeding deterrent activity against stored-product insect pest of maize Tribolium castaneum with the two compounds, methyl paraben and lupeol, being identified in these extracts.

Other compounds in B. madagascariensis are (−)-maackiain, (−)-medicarpin, gypsogenin 3-O-rhamnosylglucuronide, (−)-homopterocarpin, pterocarpin, 4-methoxymedicarpin, 4-methoxymaackiain, 4-methoxyhomopterocarpin, 4-methoxypterocarpin, anhydrovariabilin and coumestrol dimethyl ether.[9]
