A prickly shrub, 0.5-2.5 m. high, the slender twigs glabrous or puberulent, the prickles mostly solitary and extra-axillary. Leaves small, slender-petioled, glabrous or puberulent; pinnae 1-3 pairs; leaflets 3-8 pairs, oblong to oval, 2-6 mm. long, 1-3-nerved, obtuse or rounded; peduncles very slender, about 2 cm. long, or shorter; flowers capitate, glabrous; stamens twice as many as the corolla-lobes; legume linear-oblong, 2.5-5 cm. long, 6-8 mm. wide, glabrous, 4— 7 -seeded, more or less constricted between the seeds, the margins unarmed or prickly.
Type locality: Upper Spring on the Cimarron River, New Mexico. Distribution : Oklahoma to Texas and New Mexico.

Mimosa borealis, the fragrant mimosa or pink mimosa, is a plant in the family Fabaceae.[1] It is found from Oklahoma to Kansas and south-eastern Colorado, south through central and western Texas and New Mexico to Mexico. The habitat consists of rocky hills, canyons and brushy areas.[2] The plant has a height around 3 feet (90 cm).[3] The flowering phase of the plant is between spring to summer.[4]

Mimosa borealis es una especie de arbusto en la familia de las fabáceas. Es originaria de Norteamérica.

Descripción

Es un pequeño arbusto que se encuentra en suelos de grava y piedra caliza en Nuevo México, Oklahoma, Kansas y Colorado y el sur de México. Tiene las ramas rígidas formando un arbusto redondeado con fragantes flores vistosas, de color rosa con anteras amarillas, que florecen desde la primavera hasta el verano de forma intermitente. Por lo general, tiene espinas que están fuertemente recurvadas y se procducen en las ramas, y pueden, o no, estar presente en los márgenes de las vainas amarillentas. Es una excelente planta para uso ornamental, además de ser muy resistente a la sequía.

Taxonomía

Mimosa borealis fue descrita por Asa Gray y publicado en Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Science, new series 4(1): 39–40. 1849.[1]

Etimología

Mimosa: nombre genérico derivado del griego μιμος (mimos), que significa "imitador"[2]

borealis: epíteto latino que significa "del norte".[3]
