Delphinium luteum is not likely to be mistaken for any other species of Delphinium . It has been treated as a variety of D . nudicaule and is closely related to that species. Sepals of the infrequent yellow-flowered phase of D . nudicaule , however, have a much drabber appearance compared with the bright shining yellow of the sepals in D . luteum .

De plant is zelffertiel, maar heeft bestuiving van kolibries (als Selasphorus sasin) of insecten nodig om goed zaden te kunnen zetten. De plant vormt na bevruchting rechtopstaande, veelzadige vruchten die bij rijping aan een zijde opensplijten.
De plant wordt bedreigd door vernietiging van zijn habitat ten behoeve van mijnbouw, het grazen van herten en schapen, het omzetten in bouwland en het weghalen uit de natuur door verzamelaars. Hierdoor komt de plant nog maar voor op twee locaties op rotsige plaatsen met struikgewas tot op hoogtes van 100 m ten op zichtte van zeeniveau. De twee overgebleven populaties tellen minder dan tachtig planten. Twee ex situ (buiten het natuurlijke verspreidingsgebied) populaties worden gehouden in Sonoma County en bij de University of California Botanical Garden in Berkeley (Californië).
In de Verenigde Staten maakt de plant deel uit van de CPC National Collection of Endangered Plants. Namens het Center for Plant Conservation houdt de University of California Botanical Garden zich bezig met de bescherming van de plant.

Маленькое, очень редкое травянистое растение с ярко-жёлтыми цветками в форме рога изобилия. Жёлтая окраска цветков — редкость для растений рода Живокость.
Произрастает Живокость жёлтая на ограниченной территории в округе Сонома в Калифорнии и никогда не распространялась за пределы отдельных прибрежных районов.
Опыляют цветы растения колибри и насекомые.
С 1970-х годов Живокость жёлтая отнесена к вымирающим видам. Охранный статус с 2000 года — находится под угрозой исчезновения (endangered)[2]. Считается, что в природе осталось, возможно, менее 100 растений. В 2002 году насчитывалось 80 растений в двух обособленных местах, причём одно из них — в ботаническом саду Калифорнийского университета в Беркли[3]. Предпринимаются попытки сохранить желтоцветковый вид живокости.
Другой близкородственный вид — Живокость Бейкера (Delphinium bakeri), компактно произрастающий в отдельных районах Калифорнии, также находится под угрозой исчезновения. Оба вида часто рассматриваются вместе.
