A tree sometimes attaining a height of 20 m., with terete, glabrous branches and brownish bark ; leaves alternate, unifoliolate, rarely trifoliolate, oblong to oblong-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, 1.14-1.75 dm. long, 4-7.5 cm. broad, usually rather obtusely shortacuminate at the apex, rounded or acute at the base, glabrous, entire, reticulate-veined, the midrib and primary veins prominent beneath, pellucid-glandular, somewhat lustrous above, paler beneath ; racemes at the ends of the branches, axillary and terminal, solitary, long-peduncled, pubescent, their branches few, short ; flowers about 8-10 mm. broad ; pedicels bibracteate at the middle, the bracts subopposite, ovate, acute, concave, subciliolate ; calyx glabrous ; sepals imbricate, ovate to orbicular-ovate, obtuse, ciliate, concave ; petals much exceeding the calyx, elliptic to nearly orbicular, 2.5-4 mm. long, 2-3.5 mm. broad, yellow, glandular-punctate, spreading or reflexed ; filaments immersed in the deep grooves of the disk ; anthers cordate, glabrous ; disk 3.5-4 mm. in diameter ; ovary depressed, beset with fleshy tubercles ; style erect, rather short ; stigma clavate-capitate ; capsule when ruptured about 2.5-3 cm. in diameter, bearing on the outside, conic, obtuse tubercles 1-2 mm. long; seeds ovate, pointed, 9-10 mm. long.

Distribution : Martinique, Trinidad, and northern South America.
