P.amaranthophilasp. nov. caused severe blight on leaves and stems ofA.tricolor. This new coelomycete is described and illustrated as a first record of aPhomopsisspecies inA.tricolorin Brazil. Among the other knownPhomopsisspecies inAmaranthus,P.amaranthiis morphologically different from the new species, andP.amaranthicola(=P.amaranthicola) inAmaranthusspp. is anomen invalidumbecause it was not properly described and/or published and both sets of authors did not designate a nomenclatural type, as required by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
