Zanthoxylum harmsianum (L) Club 37 : 86. 1910.

A shrub with nearly glabrous branchlets which are more or less armed with few, small, reflexed prickles 2 mm. in length ; leaves odd-pinnate, glabrous or nearly so, 6-12 cm. long, the rachis somewhat angled and bearing few reflexed prickles about 2 mm. long ; leaflets 5-11, the lateral ones with petiolules scarcely 1 mm. long, ovate to oval, 2-4.6 cm. long, 1-2.2 cm. broad, the apex shortly and obtusely acuminate, the base slightly inequilateral, obtuse or nearly rounded, the margin entire or sometimes minutely repand, with a small thickening on each side near the base, coriaceous, shining or lustrous above, in drying becoming nearly black with the brownish midrib impressed above, prominent beneath, the lateral nerves wide-spreading, nearly straight and very slender, above obsolete, beneath somewhat prominent ; panicles subterminal, the branches, peduncles and pedicels very shortly and minutely puberulent, becoming glabrescent ; sepals 4, subdeltoid, obtuse or rounded, scarcely 1 mm. long ; follicles 5-7 mm. in diameter, strongly wrinkled within, grayish-brown ; seeds black, shining.
Type locality : Sierra Santa Elena, near Tecpam, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Distribution : Guatemala.
