Erect, biennial or perennial, herbs. Leaves simple; margin dentate, the teeth extended into long cilia. Inflorescence composed of
capitate umbels, each composed of sessile flowers.
Bracts well-developed, in c.2 series, forming a connate, conspicuous involucre around each head. Calyx teeth conspicuous. Petals erect, often with a
sharply inflexed apex. Stylopodium not well developed. Fruit smooth
or tuberculate.

Alepidea is a genus of about 30 species in the family Apiaceae, all of which are endemic to Africa. They occur mainly in southern Africa, but can be found as far north as Ethiopia.
