Perennial herb, up to 40 cm. Leaves basal, somewhat pilose on both surfaces, margins entire. Stems erect, distinctly swollen near the apex, covered in velvet hairs, often turning golden brown. Capitula solitary and terminal; outer florets white, often tinged deep reddish purple, inner florets white. The florets normally not spreading widely. See G. viridifolia for comparison.
