Polygala flagellaris Small, Bull. N. Y. Bot Gard. 3: 427. 1905.
Stems several or many from a thick perennial root, spreading or ascending, densely leafy, 1.5-5.8 dm. long; leaves in whorls of 3-5 to middle or nearly to apex of stem, usually equaling or exceeding the internodes, cuneateor spatulate-obovate, 4-10 mm. long, 0.7-4 mm. wide, obtuse to acute, mucronulate, abruptly or gradually narrowed into the petiole-like base, sometimes so strongly involute as to appear lanceolate or linear, thickish, reticulate-veined; the upper similar, linear or linear-lanceolate; racemes cylindric, acuminate, dense or rather loose, 4-7 mm. thick, the axis 2.5-24.5 cm. long; bracts subulate, deciduous, ciliolate, 1.3-1.8 mm. long; pedicels 0.2-0.4 mm. long; flowers whitish and greenish; sepals ovate, obtuse or acutish, ciliolate, 1.4-1.8 mm. long; wings obovate-oval, 2.4-3 mm. long, 1.6-1.9 mm. wide, broadly rounded, cuneate at base, about 6 nerved ; keel 2.3 mm. long, the crest on each side of a cuneate lobed lamella and 2 simple or bifid lobes; capsule oval, 2-2.4 mm. long, 1.5-1.6 mm. wide; seed ellipsoid-cylindric, short-beaked at base, pilose, 1.7-1.8 mm. long; aril 1.2-1.6 mm. high, pilose at apex, the 2 linear-elliptic scarious lobes appressed.
Typb locality: Between Cutler and Longview Camp, Florida. Distribution: Southern peninsular Florida.

Stems several from a slender biennial or perennial root, ascending or spreading, 2.5-4 dm. long; lowest leaves in 3-8 remote whorls of 4, obovate to linear-elliptic, 3.5-9 mm. long, 1-2.5 mm. wide, mucronulate, more or less involute, thickish, the middle and upper scattered, linear or elliptic-linear to subulate, 3-1 1 mm. long, 0.3-1.6 mm. wide, cuspidate, involute, the uppermost very small; racemes cylindric, acuminate, dense or loose, 3-5 mm. thick, the axis 1.5-10 cm. long; bracts ovate-subulate, ciliate, deciduous; pedicels 0.2-0.3 mm. long; flowers white and greenish; sepals broadly ovate, acutish, glabrous, 1.1-1.4 mm. long; wings oval, 1.8-2.1 mm. long, 1.3-1.5 mm. wide, broadly rounded, short-cuneate at base, 3-nerved; keel 1.7-2.1 mm. long, the crest on each side of a rounded lamella and 3 lobes; capsule oblong, 2-2.2 mm. long, 1.2-1.3 mm. wide; seed cylindric-ellipsoid, pilosulous, 1.7 mm. long; aril 0.8-1 mm. long, the 2 linear-elliptic lobes appressed.
Type locality; Coral soil, Cudjoe Key, Florida.
Distribution: Florida Keys.
