分布於世界三大洋，臺灣發現於西南部海域。

一般以底拖網捕獲，不具食用經濟價值，通常做為下雜魚用。

體頗細長而側扁。口裂大，上下頜齒細小，腭骨具1列小齒，鋤骨及舌骨無齒。眼小，眼徑短於或略等長於兩眼間隔長。具鱗，但易脫落。背鰭短，具11-13根軟條；臀鰭延長，起點在背鰭基後緣，或稍後方，具61-72根軟條(通常為64-67)；無脂鰭。脊椎骨數為91-98(通常為94-96)。發光器：下頜逢合處發光器(SO)1個；鰓被架發光器(BR) 10-13個；喉峽部最前端到胸鰭基底的腹面側發光器(IP) 15-19(17-18)個；胸鰭起點到腹鰭起點的腹側發光器(PV) 26-29(27)個；腹鰭起點到臀鰭起點的腹側發光器(VAV) 14-17(15-16)個；臀鰭起點到尾柄的腹側發光器(AC) 43-49＋2＝45-53(48-51)個；喉峽部最前端到尾柄的腹側發光器(IC) 101-113(975-100)個；側列發光器(OA) 80-95(61-93)個；側線發光器(LLP)91-99(94-96)個。體一致為銀黑色。

大洋性中層魚類，一般棲息深度約在300-800公尺間，曾被發現於1594公尺深處，生態習性不甚清楚。覓食對象多樣，諸如小魚、甲殼類及頭足類等。
