És un peix marí, mesopelàgic (els exemplars més grossos es troben a més fondària) i batipelàgic[14] que viu entre 100 i 1.200 m de fondària.[7]
Es troba a l'Atlàntic oriental (des de les illes Canàries fins al golf de Guinea. És rar al nord del golf de Cadis), les aigües tropicals de l'Atlàntic occidental, l'Atlàntic nord-occidental (el Canadà)[14][15] i les regions tropicals de l'Índic.[7][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
És inofensiu per als humans.[7]

Bonapartia pedaliota es una especie de pez,[1] la única del género Bonapartia, de la familia de los gonostomátidos o peces luminosos.[2]
El nombre del género fue puesto en honor del naturalista francés C. L. Bonaparte, célebre por su trabajo en taxonomía.[1]
Se desconoce la longitud que puede alcanzar, aunque se ha descrito en capturas una longitud máxima de 7'2 cm.[3] En la aleta dorsal no presenta espinas y tiene entre 16 y 20 radios blandos, mientras que en la aleta anal tampoco tiene espinas y unos 30 radios blandos. El opérculo y peritoneo son de color plateado, mientras que la cola es translúcida ventralmente y los radios de las aletas dorsal y caudal son pigmentados.[4]
Presenta una hilera simple de fotóforos en el cuerpo.[5]
Es un pez marino batipelágico de aguas profundas, que habita en un rango de profundidad entre los 100 y 1200 metros.[6] Se distribuye por el este del océano Atlántico raro al norte del golfo de Cádiz (España),[1] desde las islas Canarias al golfo de Guinea;[3] también por la costa oeste tropical del océano Atlántico hasta Canadá en el norte,[7] así como por aguas tropicales del océano Índico.[1]
Es una especie mesopelágica, que muestra una marcada distribución de tamaños con la profundidad, encontrándose los individuos de mayor tamaño en las zonas más profundas,[8] también batipelágico.[7] Exhiben cambios de color, oscureciéndose un poco durante la noche.[1] Se alimenta de zooplancton.

本魚鰓蓋與腹膜銀色,尾部半透明,背鰭與尾鰭鰭條有顏色,體具單列的身體發光器,背鰭軟條16至20枚;臀鰭軟條28至31枚,體長可達7.2公分。
