The Papuan pitta (Erythropitta macklotii) is a species of pitta. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the red-bellied pitta. It is found in the Aru Islands, New Guinea and the northern Cape York Peninsula. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. It is threatened by habitat loss.

The Papuan pitta (Erythropitta macklotii) is a species of pitta. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the red-bellied pitta. It is found in the Aru Islands, New Guinea and the northern Cape York Peninsula. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. It is threatened by habitat loss.
La pita de Nueva Guinea (Erythropitta macklotii) es una especie de ave paseriforme de la familia Pittidae propia de Nueva Guinea, el norte de la península del cabo York y algunas islas menores aledañas.[2] Anteriormente se consideraba una subespecie de la pita ventrirroja.
Se encuentra en Nueva Guinea, las islas Kai, las islas Aru, las Raja Ampat, Yapen, las islas de Entrecasteaux, las islas del estrecho de Torres y el norte de la península del cabo York. Su hábitat natural son los bosques húmedos tropicales, por debajo de los 1.800 metros de altitud.[1]

Deze pitta wordt ook wel als een ondersoort van de Filipijnse pitta of roodbuikpitta (Erythropitta erythrogaster sensu lato) opgevat. De nominaat werd verzameld aan de Tritonbaai (baie de Lobo) tijdens de expeditie naar Nieuw-Guinea in 1828 en in 1834 door Coenraad Jacob Temminck beschreven. De wetenschappelijke naam is een eerbetoon aan de Duitse natuuronderzoeker Heinrich Christian Macklot, die in dienst van het Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie onderzoek deed in Nederlands-Indië en ook deelnam als onderzoekleider aan de expeditie naar Nieuw-Guinea.[2][3]
Deze pitta heeft een bijna egaal bruine kop. De verschillende ondersoorten verschillen onderling weer in de verdeling van bruin en donkerbruin op de kop.[4]
Het is een vogelsoort met een groot verspreidingsgebied dat reikt van het westen van de Indonesisische provincie West-Papoea tot het uiterste noorden van de Australische deelstaat Queensland.
