Chrysophyceae, single-celled, free-swimming flagellates enclosed in spherical to pyriform to oval lorica with small flagellar pore; in some species with one or more additional small pores through which short strands of cytoplasm emerge; in some species lorica decorated with warts, spines or other markings and /or with a short neck around flagellar pore; lorica hyaline when first formed but often becoming brownish-red in older cells due to incorporation of manganese and iron compounds; one flagellum emerging through flagellar pore; very short second flagellum detected in species studied by electron microscopy; 1 or 2 (rarely 3-5) parietal chloroplasts; eyespot and/or pyrenoid present in some species; 1 or 2 anterior contractile vacuoles; reproduction by longitudinal division within the lorica, 1 daughter cell escaping through a pore and forming a new lorica; stomatocyst formed within or outside lorica (if outside, the stomatocyst may remain attached to lorica); large genus of freshwater species, some of which are common in plankton of lakes and ponds, some also occurring in saline water.
