Amphisbaena is a genus in the family Amphisbaenidae, commonly known as worm lizards. Over 100 species are placed in this diverse genus.

Etymology

The specific names carlgansi, carli, and cegei are all in honor of American herpetologist Carl Gans (1923–2009), for his contributions to the knowledge of Amphisbaenians.[3][2]

Amphisbaena es un género de reptiles anfisbenios de la familia Amphisbaenidae,[1]​ comúnmente conocida como culebras de dos cabezas, morrona o lagartijas gusano.[2]​[3]​[4]​

Descripción

El cuerpo de estas especies es cilíndrico, su cola es corta y redondeada sin presentar una marcada diferenciación con el resto del cuerpo, carecen de patas, la cabeza es también redondeada poco diferenciada y presenta ojos pequeños semiocultos debajo de la piel, los oídos no presentan orificio al exterior. La piel del cuerpo está formada por anillos los cuales se subdividen en pequeñas escamas cuadradas.[3]​

Distribución

Las especies de este género se encuentran en América del Sur, el Caribe y Panamá.

Hábitat

Las especies de Amphisbaena viven la mayor parte de su vida enterrados, excavando túneles con el propósito de conseguir su alimento. Su dieta se compone de insectos y otros pequeños invertebrados que habitan en el suelo.[3]​

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące na Kubie, Haiti, Portoryko, Trynidadzie, w Panamie, Kolumbii, Wenezueli, Ekwadorze, Gujanie, Surinamie, Gujanie Francuskiej, Brazylii, Peru, Boliwii, Paragwaju, Urugwaju i Argentynie[12].

Etymologia

  • Amphisbaena: gr. αμφις amphis „z obydwu stron, po obu stronach”[13]; βαινω bainō „chodzić, kroczyć”[14].
  • Anops: gr. negatywny przedrostek αν- an- „bez”[15]; ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos „oczy”[16]. Gatunek typowy: Anops kingi Bell, 1833.
  • Glyptoderma: gr. γλυπτης gluptēs „rzeźbiony”[17]; δερμα derma, δερματος dermatos „skóra”[18]. Gatunek typowy: Amphisbaena vermicularis Wagler, 1824.
  • Typhloblanus: τυφλος tuphlos „ślepy”[19]; rodzaj Blanus Wagler, 1830. Gatunek typowy: Amphisbaena caeca Cuvier, 1829.
  • Sarea: J.E. Gray nie wyjaśnił etymologii nazwy rodzajowej[5]. Gatunek typowy: Amphisbaena caeca Cuvier, 1829.
