Description ( 英語 )

由AmphibiaWeb articles提供
A rather small Leptopelis (males 33-36 mm) from forests at high altitudes in eastern R. D. Congo and western Uganda, with reduced webbing and a small tympanum. Dorsum brown with a darker irregular pattern. The males have a white gular sac.In the mountains of south-western Uganda and adjacent R. D. Congo there are two species of Leptopelis, apparently inseparable in the preserved state. One is a forest form, the other lives in montane grassland. One has a white gular sac, the other a blue. I have used the name L. kivuensis for the forest form with a white gular sac and L. karissimbensis for the grassland form with a blue gular sac. In this I believe I follow Laurent, except that he notes that L. kivuensis has a blue gular sac! This account was taken from "Treefrogs of Africa" by Arne Schiøtz with kind permission from Edition Chimaira (http://www.chimaira.de/) publishers, Frankfurt am Main.

Biology ( 英語 )

由Arkive提供
Little is currently known about the Kivu tree frog's biology. It is believed to feed upon soft-bodied insects, sitting in wait for its prey to come near, before making a rapid, open-mouthed lunge (3) (4). Like its relative, Leptopelis modestus, the male probably attracts a mate by making its call and displaying its throat (3). The Kivu tree frog's reproduction involves the female burying the eggs in underground nests near to standing water. The onset of heavy rains triggers the eggs to hatch, and the resulting flooding washes the tadpoles into the nearby water body (1) (5).

Conservation ( 英語 )

由Arkive提供
While there are no specific conservation measures in place for the Kivu tree frog at present, it does occur in three protected sites: Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kibale and Bwindi National Parks in Uganda (1). Bwindi National Park has had notable success in preventing the encroachment of agriculture and illegal forest clearance that has been severely problematic for other National Parks in the area (6). This enforcement will help to provide a valuable refuge for unique species such as the Kivu tree frog.

Description ( 英語 )

由Arkive提供
A diminutive species, the Kivu tree frog has a brown upper body with irregular darker markings (2). Like many other tree-dwelling frogs, this species' digits end in broad, circular adhesive pads, which aid climbing (3). The male Kivu tree frog possesses a white inflatable throat pouch, known as a gular sac, and makes a quiet call, consisting of a rapid series of three to four “clacks” (2).

Threats ( 英語 )

由Arkive提供
The main threat to the Kivu tree frog appears to be habitat clearance for agriculture, human settlement and wood extraction. With its relatively limited range and declining population, it is likely that, without intervention, this species may soon have its IUCN Red List status upgraded to Vulnerable (1).

Leptopelis kivuensis ( 英語 )

由wikipedia EN提供

Leptopelis kivuensis is a species of frog in the family Arthroleptidae. It is found in the highlands of western Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, and in the extreme eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.[1][2][3] It has been considered synonym of Leptopelis karissimbensis, and has been confused with that species.[2][4] Common names Kisenyi forest treefrog and Kivu tree frog have been coined for it.[2][5]

Description

Adult males measure 28–37 mm (1.1–1.5 in) in snout–vent length.[4] The tympanum is small.[3] The fingers and toes have reduced webbing.[3][4] Dorsal coloration is variable and adult males may be tan, reddish-brown, or light green. Some tan or brown individuals bear light brown triangular patterns between the eyes and sacrum, an irregular dark brown line running from the canthus rostralis through the eye and over the tympanum and to the forelimb, dark brown spots on the flanks, and dark brown crossbars on the upper side of the limbs. A white or cream spot under the eye may be present, albeit being indistinct.[4] Males have a white gular vocal sac.[3][4]

The male advertisement call is a pulsed, single clack repeated in rapid succession. Double clacks are also possible.[4]

Habitat and conservation

Leptopelis kivuensis is associated with forests at elevations of 1,481–2,600 m (4,859–8,530 ft) above sea level. It occurs in montane wetlands and forest ecotones. Breeding takes place in seasonally flooded swamp forests.[1] The eggs are buried in nests in the ground. The onset of heavy rains causes the eggs to hatch, and the flooding washes the tadpoles into water.[1][5]

This species is probably affected by habitat loss caused by agriculture, wood extraction, and human settlements. However, much of its range is within national parks: Kahuzi-Biega and Virunga National Parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale, and Bwindi National Parks in Uganda, and Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda.[1]
