The species reaches 19.4 cm (7.6 inches) SL and is believed to be a facultative air-breather. Its specific epithet, waiampi, refers to the Wayampi people who inhabit the Cupixi basin.[2]

Hypostomus waiampi is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de harnasmeervallen (Loricariidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 2005 door Hollanda Carvalho & Weber.
