The species reaches 36.2 cm (14.3 inches) in total length, can weigh up to at least 510 g, and is believed to be a facultative air-breather.[2]

Its specific epithet, hemicochliodon, refers to the fact that its teeth are about half as spoon-shaped as those of species such as Hypostomus cochliodon, which are xylophagous and specialize in eating wood.[2]

Hypostomus hemicochliodon is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de harnasmeervallen (Loricariidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 2003 door Armbruster.
