Restricted to Pemba island
A. tachiro pembaenis has been DNA barcoded; there is a DNA barcode available for a specimen stored at the RMCA.
Accipiter tachiro pembaensis is more colourful and smaller than the mainland dwelling A. tachiro (Louette 2000).
Variation between subspecies: the island population is smaller in size (Louette 2000).
