Aframomum is a genus in the Zingiberaceae family with species that have well-developed rhizomes. Inflorescence usually congested, terminal on a separate leafless shoot, sometimes subterranean with only the apical part visible, bracts each subtending 1 flower. About 50 spp., tropical Africa, Mascarenes and Madagascar: one species Aframomum melegueta, cultivated for its spicy seeds and widely cultivated in W. Africa and also S. America

Large perennial plants with leafy shoots fully developed at flowering time; leaf sheaths always forming a distinct pseudostem; leaves distichous. Inflorescences arising from the base or from a rhizome. Flowers large, zygomorphic. Calyx spathaceous. Lateral petals narrow, posterior larger, hood-like. Staminode 1, large, petaloid (labellum); stamen 1, free; apex 3-lobed. Fruit a berry, usually red.

Aframomum is a genus in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is widespread across tropical Africa as well as on some islands of the Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Seychelles, and Mauritius).[2] It is represented by approximately 50 species. It is larger than other genera in its family. Its species are perennials and produce colorful flowers.[3]

Aframomum melegueta (Melegueta pepper) is an economically important edible crop in West Africa.[4]
