The blue-headed racket-tail (Prioniturus platenae), also known as the Palawan racket-tail and locally as kinawihan,[2] is a parrot found in the western Philippines around Palawan. The species was formerly considered conspecific with the blue-crowned racket-tail.[3] It is locally known as 'kilit'.[4] It inhabits humid lowland forest in small flocks. It is threatened by habitat destruction and limited trapping for the cage-bird trade.
The blue-headed racket-tail is 27–28 cm long. The plumage is green with a bright, light blue head, blue underwings (except for green coverts) and, in the male, a bluish breast. The beak is bluish gray and iris is yellowish.[5] The species utters a variety of raucous squawks with the occasional musical phrase.[1]
Ebird describes this bird as "A medium-sized parrot of lowland forest and edge on Palawan and neighboring islands. The two central tail feathers have extended shafts ending in a racket shape. Overall green in color, darker on the back and paler below, with yellow under the base of the tail. Male has extensive blue on the head, which is reduced in the female. Note the pale cream-colored bill. Occurs together with Blue-naped parrot, but lacks the red bill. Voice includes various grating calls and shrill squeals."[6]
Little is known about this parrot. It is seen in pairs or small flocks, and tends to be very noisy in flight but more silent while feeding. The species feeds on a wide variety of nuts and fruits.[5] It feeds regularly in banana plantations, resulting in some persecution as a pest.[7]
Like all other racket-tails, they nest in tree cavities. Thus, they are reliant on larger trees to be able to breed. [4]
The species is endemic to the islands of Palawan, Balabac Island, Dumaran Island, Linapacan, Culion, and Busuanga Island.It inhabits lowland forest and adjacent cultivated areas, and occasionally scrubland and mangroves, at altitudes of up to at least 650 m.[1]
The species is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and has been since 1994. The population has been estamted at 1,500 to 7,00 mature individuals with the population believed to be on the decline.[1]
Deforestation is considered the worst threat. On Palawan, deforestation has been rapid due to large mining and logging operations. Mining for chromite on Palawan (and surrounding islands) has contributed majorly to habitat destruction in the area. Illegal logging seems to prevalent in southern Palawan, further putting the blue-headed racket-tail at risk. Capture for the illegal exotic pet trade has a minor impact, as it is usually only captured and sold locally, with very few shipments going out of the Palawan area. Most of the time, the birds die quickly in captivity.[7]
The species is present in conservation areas, since the entirety of Palawan is technically a game reserve where hunting is illegal (however this still occurs), and there are populations in several other protected areas.[1] Awareness campaigns and festivals have been initiated by the Katala Foundation.[4]
Conservation actions proposed include surveys in remaining lowland forests throughout its rangem. Seek greater control of the cage-bird trade. Support the proposed extension of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Clamp down on illegal logging and ensure the environmental impacts of proposed mining operations are properly assessed and damage is mitigated for. Assess the damage it causes to crops and tackle the threat of persecution by developing of alternative mitigation measures for farmers. Carry out awareness campaigns regarding the protected status of the species [8]

El lorito-momoto de Palawan (Prioniturus platenae)[2] es una especie de ave psitaciforme de la familia Psittaculidae endémica del oeste de Filipinas. Inicialmente esta especie se consideraba conespecífica de P. discurus.
Mide entre 27 y 28 centímetros de largo (23,5 sin contar sus raquetas).[3] El plumaje de los machos es principalmente verde, con tonos amarillentos en las partes inferiores. Su cabeza es totalmente azul y tiene el pecho y la parte superior del abdomen salpicados de azul turquesa, y la parte interna de las alas es de color azul. Las dos plumas centrales de su cola son largas, y consisten en un filamento pelado terminado en un mechón negro a modo de raquetas, que sobresalen de la cola. Su pico es blanquecino azulado y su iris es de color amarillento. Las hembras tiene la cabeza de un azul menos intenso y carece de tonos azules. Los juveniles se parecen a las hembras pero sin raquetas en la cola.
Se encuentra en las islas de la provincia filipina de Palawan. Habita en los bosques húmedos de tierras bajas en pequeñas bandadas, pero está amenazada por la destrucción del hábitat y la captura para el comercio de aves de jaula.

Palawaninviirikaija on noin 28 cm pitkä. Aikaisemmin sen katsottiin olevan filippiinienviirikaijan alalaji. Kuten kaikilla viirikaijoilla, on silläkin pidentyneet keskimmäiset pyrstösulat, joiden päässä on ikään kuin lusikka tai lasta. Sen höyhenpuku on pääosin vihreä, pää ja alapuoli ovat sinertävät ja paikoin vatsan höyhenten reunat ovat keltaiset. Pyrstön alapeitinhöyhenet ovat kellanvihreät ja vihreäkärkiset. Pidentyneiden pyrstösulkien "lusikat" ovat mustat ja vihreäkiiltoiset.
Palawaninviirikaija elää Filippiinien länsiosassa Palawanin saarella ja sen lähisaarilla. Sen populaatio on kooltaan 2 500–10 000 yksilöä. Laji on ollut aikaisemmin yleinen, mutta on nykyisin erittäin uhanalainen. Taantumisen pääasiallisina syinä ovat metsien hävitys ja pyynti lemmikkieläinkaupan tarpeisiin.
Laji elää alavien maiden metsissä ja myös lähellä ihmisasutusta 300 m:n korkeudelle merenpinnasta.
Pesintä tunnetaan puutteellisesti. Pesä on puun kolossa.

De palawanvlagstaartpapegaai is exclusief de 50 tot 75 centimeter lange staartveren, 23,5 centimeter en heeft een vleugellengte van 15,5 centimeter. De soort is daarom vlagstaartpapegaai van gemiddelde grootte. De twee geslachten verschillen enigszins van elkaar. Het mannetje heeft een geheel turquoiseblauwe kop. De rest van de bovenzijde is vaalgroen. De borst en het bovenste deel van de buik is donkergeel tot groen met wat turquoise blauw daardoorheen. Het onderste deel van de buik en de onderzijde van de staart zijn geelgroen. De vleugels en de staartveren zijn groen. De middelste staartpennen hebben een verlengde schaft en hebben aan het eind een soort zwarte vlag. De buitenste staartpennen zijn donkergroen en het onderste deel is turquoise blauw. De vliegveren zijn kobaltgroen met groene randen. Het vrouwtje heeft een minder felblauwe kop. De onderzijde van het vrouwtje is bovendien minder blauw. De snavel van de Palawanvlagstaartpapegaai is blauwachtig wit, de ogen zijn bruin en de poten donkergrijs.
De palawanvlagstaartpapegaai is, vooral tijdens het vliegen, een luidruchtige vogel.
Van de palawanvlagstaartpapegaai zijn geen verschillende ondersoorten bekend. De soort komt alleen op het eiland Palawan en de volgende eilanden daaromheen: Balabac, Busuanga, Calauit, Culion en Dumaran. De Palawanvlagstaartpapegaai komt daar voor in de toppen van laaglandbossen, lage begroeiing, mangrove en nabijgelegen gecultiveerde gebieden. De soort leeft alleen, in paartjes of in kleine groepjes.
Van de palawanvlagstaartpapegaai is niets bekend over de voortplanting in het wild.
De palawanvlagstaartpapegaai heeft een beperkt verspreidingsgebied en daardoor is de kans op uitsterven aanwezig. De grootte van de populatie werd in 2016 door BirdLife International geschat op 1,5 tot 7 duizen volwassen individuen en de populatie-aantallen nemen vooral af door habitatverlies. Het leefgebied wordt aangetast door ontbossing waarbij natuurlijk bos wordt omgezet in gebied voor agrarisch gebruik en mijnbouw; daarnaast vindt illegale houtkap plaats. Vangst voor de kooivogelhandel is een minder grote bedreiging omdat de levensduur van de vogels in gevangenschap zeer kort is. Om deze redenen staat deze soort als kwetsbaar op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN.[1]
Er gelden beperkingen voor de handel in deze papegaai, want de soort staat in de Bijlage II van het CITES-verdrag.[1]
