The species reaches 33 cm (13 in) in total length and is believed to be a facultative air-breather.[2] It is known to be syntopic with other loricariid species in the genus Hypostomus, including Hypostomus ancistroides, H. denticulatus, H. heraldoi, H. iheringii, and H. regani.[3]

Hypostomus margaritifer is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de harnasmeervallen (Loricariidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1908 door Regan.
