Allium ampeloprasum is the progenitor of the cultivsated garlic and opnion. It is an exciting plant, for 5-3 years after germination it has only leaves. Then it blooms and underground produces dozens of bulblets, often the mother plant dies in this year. In this pic u can see one of the outer bulb tunics and the bulblets on it. The bulblets are rather small and sprout into new plants.

This is probably the progenitor of garden onion and garlic. It is a common plant of the Mediterranean region, expanding eastwards to central Asia. It blooms in early summer and there are purple plants (like this one and green ones.

The bulb grows for several years withous flowering, when it is mature it blooms, produces dozens of bulblets and dies out. It is an amazing altroistic phenomenon where the "mother" plant dies out passing all its enery to its decedents.
