Coleps viridis This ciliat belongs to prostomatid group. Concerning symbiontic green algae it should be a specimen of Coleps hirtus viridis EHRENBERG. Coleps is one of nature´s little scavengers. It can eat residual tissue attached to cast off exoskeletons of arthropods, or will attack wounded organisms. Collection from littoral region (reed bed by Phragmites) of a rain storage reservoir in Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany). Coleps (coe-leps) is a predatory ciliate, made distinctive by the calcareous plates which enclose the cell. anterior end usually flattened, posterior end typically with a number of short spines. Most usually consumed dead and decaying animal matter. Not common. Phase contrast.
