Sida rhombifolia (Indian hemp, Teaweed) blooming at Frenchman's Forest Natural Area, Palm Beach County. Another Sida species (S. acuta) lives here as well but I think this one is S. rhombifolia. This plant is often listed as native but grows in over 70 countries and was apparently introduced into the United States in the 1800's as a fiber crop. It is in the mallow family and the entire plant is loaded with wondrous chemicals that have made it an important medicinal plant worldwide, especially in Ayurvedic medicine. They include ephedrine, beta-phenethylamine (PEA-the main protagonist in the "chocolate theory of love" in the 80's) and pseudoephedrine, to name just a few. They are also loaded with nutrients. The list of medicinal uses is large and surprising. It is not related to hemp at all but the stems do yield a very good fiber. Date: 13 October 2011, 10:27.
