Description: Pituophis melanoleucus (Daudin, 1803) - gopher snake (captive, Valley of Fire State Park visitor center, Nevada, USA) From exhibit signage: The gopher snake is found throughout North America, up to 8,000 feet elevation. This makes it one of the most widespread snake species. They are capable of producing a loud prolonged hiss when alarmed. They also mimic the rattlesnake, by flattening their head, inflating their body, and vibrating their tail. The gopher snake's diet consists of rodents, bird eggs, and bats.
