Sori surrounding peduncles or pedicels or often involving base of the rachis (sometimes even on stems), forming conspicuous elongate bodies 7-30 mm. in length, covered with a thick white false membrane that gradually flakes away, leaving exposed the firmly agglutinated black spore-mass ; sterile cells more or less gelatinized, often almost in fragments ; spores medium to dark reddish-brown, somewhat compressed laterally and so appearing oblong to circular according to view, occasionally obtusely angled, at times with hyaline fragments still attached, verruculose though sometimes rather obscurely, 13-16 ^, rarely 18 (Ji or even 20 ju, in length.
