A perennial; stem prostrate and creeping, glabrous or strigose; leaves 3-foliolate; stipules ovate, about 1 cm. long; petioles 1-5 dm. long, conspicuously punctate, glabrous or somewhat short-pubescent; leaflets orbicular or rounded-obovate, 3-8 cm. long, 3-7 cm. wide glabrous to cinereous-puberulent; peduncles erect, 2-6 dm. long; racemes 5-30 cm. long, dense; bracts oblong-lanceolate, scarious, 1-2 cm. long, conspicuously glandular and ciliate; calyx densely villous and glandular, unequally cleft; tube 4-5 mm. long; lobes linear-lanceolate, acuminate, the lowest one about 15 mm. long, the rest about 10 mm. long; corolla reddish-purple, 15 mm. long; banner broadly obovate, with a short claw; blades of the wings oblong-oblanceolate, 12 mm. long, with a rounded basal lobe, those of the keel-petals 10 mm. long, obliquely _lunate obtuse. L claws of both 4 mm. long; tenth filament free to near the base, pod about 8 mm. long, hirsute, with a veryismall straight beak; seed elliptic, light-brown.

Hoita orbicularis is a species of legume known by the common name roundleaf leather-root. It is endemic to California, where it is relatively widespread throughout the state's mountain ranges, growing most often in moist habitat. It is a perennial herb growing prostrate or nearly so at ground level with large leaves each made up of three round leaflets up to 11 centimetres (4+14 in) long each. The herbage is glandular and often hairy. The inflorescence is an erect raceme which may be up to 35 centimetres (13+23 in) long. Each of the many flowers is one or two centimeters long, pealike, and generally a shade of light to medium purple in color. The fruit is a hairy, veiny legume pod just under 1 centimetre (12 in) long.
