Native Distribution: Southern Labrador south along coast to Florida; local around Great Lakes (also present on Pacific Coast). (NPIN, 2007)
Overall A member of the Cakile genus that is notable as a fleshy maritime or beach plant. It is a lax or zigzag, low-growing plant. (Peattie, 1930) This is a low, fleshy, branching beach plant. (NPIN, 2007)
Flowers are white or purple and short. (Peattie, 1930) They are white to lilac in color, form at the tips of the branches, and like all mustard flowers, they have four petals. (Weatherbee, 2006) Flowers are pale lavender. (NPIN, 2007)
Fruit is green and has two attached sections. The upper portion is plumper and longer. (Weatherbee, 2006) The joint is articulating, the upper joint beaked and dropping off. Each joint contains 1 cell and 1 seed, or the lower one may be empty. The upper joint of the pod is longbeaked, ovoid, and lanceolate. The articulating surface of the upper joint has 2-4 shallow pits, while the articulating surface of the lower joint has 2 long and 4 short sharp-tipped processes. (Peattie, 1930) The common name derives from the rocket-like shape of the seed pods. (NPIN, 2007)
Stems and Leaves are succulent and wider in the upper third of the leaf. They are wavy, shallowly toothed, or entire (no teeth). (Weatherbee, 2006)
Plant is 10-80 cm (4-32") tall
Flowers 5 mm (1/8") wide
Stems are 20-30 cm (8-12") long
Leaves are 1-2 cm (3/8-3/4") wide

Cakile edentula, the American searocket, is a species of the flowering Cakile plant. This plant is native to North America.
Cakile edentula is most commonly found on the beaches and dunes of North America. More commonly, it is found on the East coast of the United States. American sea-rocket is most likely to be found in areas along the coastline. This plant is not a wetland plant, but can occasionally be found in wetland environments. It is also a non-native, invasive species in other parts of the world, especially Japan and Australia.[1]
Cakile edentula grows on the dunes of coastal beaches, as well as shorelines of freshwater lakes. Well drained, sandy soil is preferred. It is likely to be found in areas midway up beaches, out of the range of waves and tides, which can destroy individuals, especially through storm events. Cakile edentula has the life cycle of an annual plant in Northern latitudes. In warmer climates, it survives as a biennial if possible.[2] Cakile edentula grows roots more aggressively and intensively if a nearby competitor is sensed. The plant does not react this way if the nearby competitor is kin.[3]
Individuals of this species are succulent plants with thick leaves.[4] This plant grows as a short shrub on beaches. Leaves, one per node, alternately grow on the stem. These leaves have various teeth and lobe patterns.
Flowers are separate, radially symmetrical, and contain four petals. These flowers can be pink to red, blue to purple, or white. Fruit are small and green, about 1–2 centimeters in diameter. These fruit are dry and do not split open when ripe. Fruit are released at the end of each growing season.
The leaves are edible, preferably cooked, and not eaten in great quantity.[4]

Cakile edentula
Cakile edentula – gatunek rośliny jednorocznej, rzadko bylina, z rodziny kapustowatych (Brassicaceae).
