Der Horst-Rot-Schwingel (Festuca nigrescens), auch Schwärzlicher Rot-Schwingel genannt, ist ein Süßgras (Poaceae) und gehört zur Rot-Schwingel-Gruppe (Festuca rubra agg.). Es handelt sich bei dieser Art um einen Komplex noch unzureichend erforschter Sippen. Es werden in der Literatur derzeit zwei Unterarten genannt: Festuca nigrescens subsp. nigrescens und die feinblättrigere Festuca nigrescens subsp. microphylla[1].
Die Art in ist weiten Teilen Europas verbreitet.[2] In Deutschland kommt sie vor allem in den Triften und Magerwiesen des Berglandes vor. Sie wächst außerdem in Ruderalfluren und in Siedlungsbrachen, krautigen Waldlichtungsfluren, in Borstgrasrasen, in Glatthafer-Talfettwiesen, auf öffentlichen Grünflächen und Anlagen. Das Gras bevorzugt frische, oft nährstoffarme, saure und humose Böden.[3]
Der Horst-Rot-Schwingel ist ein mehrjähriger Hemikryptophyt. Er bildet nur etwa 2 bis 5 Millimeter lange Ausläufer und wächst daher charakteristisch dichthorstig. Er erreicht Wuchshöhen zwischen 20 und 90 Zentimetern. Die borstlichen Blattspreiten werden 0,4 bis 1, zuweilen 1,1 Millimeter im Durchmesser. Sie verfügen über fünf bis sieben Leitbündel und sind meist dunkelgrün, seltener etwas blaugrün. Die Spitze ist glatt. Die Ährchen werden 6,5 bis 9,5 Millimeter lang. Die Deckspelzen erreichen 4 bis 6,5 Millimeter Länge. Sie tragen eine 1 bis 4 Millimeter lange Granne. Die Art blüht im Juni.[4]
Die Chromosomenzahl beträgt 2n = 28 oder 42.[5]
Aufgrund von sehr feinen Blättern und einer dichten Narbe gilt Horstrotschwingel als beispielhafte Rasenart, die auch als Zierrasen gesät wird.[6]

Festuca nigrescens, also known as the alpine Chewing's fescue, is a species of grass in the family Poaceae. It was first described in 1788. It is perennial and grows in temperate biomes.[1]
Festuca nigrescens is perennial, caespitose, and densely clumped. Butt sheaths are persistent, investing on the base of the culm, along with fibrous dead sheaths. The culms grow from 30 - 90 centimeters long. The leaf sheaths are tubular, with flat margins glabrous on their surface. Ligules are an eciliate membrane. The leaf blades are filiform, conduplicate, and are 0.4 to 0.7 millimeters wide. Leaf blades are either dark green or glaucous. The venation of the leaf blades have 5 - 7 vascular bundles, along with strands of sclerenchyma below the veins (some are above the veins). The leaves are smooth, or scabrous, and rough adaxially.[1]
The inflorescence is in open panicles, which are 4-10 centimeters long. The panicle branches are scabrous. The spikelets are solitary, whereas the fertile spikelets are pedicelled.[1]
