Lobelia angulata G. Forst.

Flowering and fruiting all year round.

Lobelia angulata is close relative of Lobelia wollastonii, but differs from the latter in its leaves 8-16 mm long, 6-18 mm wide, petiolate (vs. ca. 0.5 mm long, ca. 4.5 mm wide, nearly sessile), calyx lobes 3-4 mm (vs. 1.2-2.5 mm).

Lobelia angulata is occurring in E, S, and SW China, India, Nepal to Papua New Guinea.

Herbs perennial. Stems prostrate, 12-55 cm, villous, simple or branch at base, nodes rooted. Leaves alternate, petiolate; petioles 2-7 cm, puberulent; leaf blades ovate-orbicular, cordate or ovate, 0.8-1.6 cm long, 0.6-1.8 cm broad, puberulent on both surfaces, base obliquely cordate, apex acute or obtuse, margin serrate. Flowers solitary and axillary; pedicels 0.7-3.5 cm, glabrous. Calyx tube urceolate, 3-4 mm long, 2-3 mm broad, glabrous; calyx lobes linear-lanceolate, 3-4 mm, straight, margin with 2-3 pairs of denticles. Corolla purple-red, pale purple, green or yellow-white, 6-10 mm; corolla tube glabrous outsides, villous inside; limb 2-lipped; upper two lobes linear-lanceolate; lower three lobes lanceolate. Stamens connate above middle; filament-tube glabrous; anther tube ca. 1 mm, back villous; lower two anthers barbate at top. Fruit a berry, purple-red, ellipsoid-globose, 1-1.3 cm. Seeds nearly globose, slightly compressed, verruculose.

The chromosomal number of Lobelia angulata is 2n = 70, 140 (Murray et al., 1992).

Growing in fields, roadsides, wet places on hills, grassy slopes or open woods; lower elevations.

Lobelia angulata, previously known as Pratia angulata, and commonly known as pānakenake, is a small herbaceous scrambling herb native to New Zealand.
