Erect perennial herb with 1-several annual stems, up to 1.5 m tall, branched near the top, growing from a short rhizome. Leaves shortly petiolate, lanceolate-oblong up to c. 12 × 4 cm, mucronate at the apex, roughly hairy above, more or less densely hairy beneath; margin almost entire or irregularly crenulate, rolled under. Capitula very numerous, in clusters, together forming a large paniculate head. Involucral bracts 3-5-seriate, 4-7 mm long, purplish, linear-lanceolate; outer more or less reflexed. Florets purple, 7-8 mm long.
