Psathyrotes annua (Nutt.) A. Gray

Annuals (rarely persisting), 4–15 cm; glandular-pubescent, weakly tomentose, furfuraceous. Stems erect and spreading, much branched. Leaf blades rounded-deltate to reniform, 4–18 × 6–26 mm, margins of some or all toothed. Peduncles 1–28 mm. Involucres turbinate, 6–9 mm. Phyllaries 13–19, outer falling or persistent, 5–6, lanceolate to lance-linear, tips erect, inner falling, 8–13, lance-linear, tips erect. Florets 10–21; corollas yellow, often purplish at tips, 4–5 mm. Cypselae 2–3 mm; pappi of 35–50, subequal bristles in 1 series, 1–4 mm. 2n = 34.

A furfuraceous canescent winter-annual; stem divaricately branched from the base, 5— 15 cm. high; petioles 1-2 cm. long; leaf-blades suborbicular, rhombic, or somewhat reniform, 8-12 mm. long, 8-15 mm wide, thick, sinuately dentate, subcuneate at the base; heads solitary in the forks of the stem or supra-axillary, 1-2 cm. long; involucre turbinate, 5-6 mm. high and about as broad; outer bracts linear, sometimes with spatulate tips, puberulent, the inner more lanceolate, obtuse, scarious-margined below; corolla 4-5 mm. long, the tube less than I mm. long, the lobes triangular-ovate, pubescent without; anthers 2 mm. long, with lanceolate tips; style-branches less than 1 mm. long, subcapitate-truncate at the apex; achenes elongateobconic, 3 mm. long, hirsute; pappus-bristles 2.5 mm. long.

Psathyrotes annua is a species of flowering plant in the aster family known by the common names annual psathyrotes, turtleback, or mealy rosettes. It is native to the southwestern United States and as far north as Idaho. It grows in desert and scrub habitat, often in areas with alkali soils among plants such as shadscale. It is a low, flat or mounding plant with spreading, hairy, scaly stems. It is pale green to reddish purple in color with gray-green leaves, its color dull from the coating of fibers on its surface. The irregularly rounded leaf blades are up to 1.6 centimeters long with wavy or toothed edges. The knobby inflorescence arises from the leaf axils. It is lined with hairy gray-green phyllaries with dull points that curve outward. It contains several hairy yellow to reddish disc florets. The fruit is an achene covered densely in long hairs and tipped with a large pappus of bristles.
