Psychotria peduncularis var. angustibracteata Verdc.

peduncularis: pedunculate, referring to the stalked inflorescences;
angustibracteata: with narrow bracts.

Usually a very small shrub less than 1m tall, rarely taller in our region. leaves opposite, narrowly to broadly elliptic-oblong, somewhat obovate or lanceolate, up to c. 26 cm long but usually shorter, fairly thinly textured, mostly hairless but sometimes hairy beneath particularly on the midrib. Stipules large, up to 2.2 × 1.5 cm, 2-lobed in the apical half, sometimes ciliate on the margins. Inflorescences on a peduncle 1-9(15) cm long, compact-capitate, surrounded by involucre bracts, 7-9 mm long, distinctly longer than wide. Flowers small, white, c. 6 mm in diameter. Fruit ellipsoid, c. 1 cm long, blue to black, sometimes crowned by the persistent calyx.

Local

This variety is apparently restricted to various isolated forested mountains in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, such as Chirinda Forest, Mt Gorongosa and Serra de Morrumbala.
