Rutilus stoumboudae is distinguished from its closest relative genetically R. rutilus, by having 16-17 total gill rakers (vs. 13-14) and modally 9 and 9 branched rays of the dorsal and anal fins (vs. 10 and 10 in R. rutilus). It can be diganosed from R. pigus by the absence of nuptial tubercles, and having 39-43 scales on lateral line (vs. 46-51) and 8-9 branched rays in the anal fin (vs. 9-11) (Ref. 96829).
