Heteroteuthis hawaiiensis is a species of bobtail squid native to the central and western Pacific Ocean. It occurs in waters off Hawaii, Bonin, the Ryukyu Islands, Indonesia, and the Great Australian Bight. H. hawaiiensis may also be present in Banc Combe in the southwestern Pacific () at depths of 795 to 820 m.[3]

H. hawaiiensis grows to approximately 30 mm in mantle length.[3]

The type specimen was collected near Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. It is deposited at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.[4]

Distribuzione e habitat

Si trova nelle acque delle isole Hawaii, Bonin, isole Ryukyu, Indonesia e grande baia Australiana[2]. Si può anche segnalare la sua presenza a Banc Combe, nel sudovest del Pacifico. Nuota fino a 820 m di profondità[1].

Descrizione

È simile a un calamaro, il mantello misura circa 30 mm di lunghezza[2]. Per difendersi dai predatori può emettere inchiostro o nascondersi, quando c'è poca luce (alba e tramonto) emettendo luce e rendendo così la propria sagoma poco visibile.

Comportamento

Durante la notte si sposta verso la superficie per nutrirsi[1].

Conservazione

La sua popolazione è ancora troppo poco conosciuta, quindi viene classificata come "dati insufficienti" (DD)[1].

Heteroteuthis hawaiiensis is een dwerginktvis die voorkomt centraal en in het westen van de Grote Oceaan in de wateren rond Hawaï, de Bonin-eilanden, de Riukiu-eilanden, Indonesië en de Grote Australische Bocht. H. hawaiiensis zou waarschijnlijk ook voorkomen bij Banc Combe in het zuidwesten van de Grote Oceaan. (12° 14′ 0″ ZB, 177° 28′ 0″ WL) op diepten van 795 tot 820 m.[1]

H. hawaiiensis bereikt een mantellengte van ongeveer 30 mm[1]

Het soorttype is gevonden aan Kauai (Hawaï) en is in het bezit van het National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C..[2]
