Prognathodes carlhubbsi, the southern scythemarked butterflyfish or southern scythe butterflyfish, is a species of butterflyfish found at rocky reefs in the tropical Eastern Pacific, where found at depths of 12–270 metres (39–886 ft) at the Galápagos Islands, Cocos Island, Malpelo Island, and off northwestern Peru.[2][3] Until P. carlhubbsi was described as a separate species in 1995, populations in these regions were included in P. falcifer. When separated, the true P. falcifer is restricted to more northernly regions (off California and Mexico), and it has whitish-grey (not clear yellow) belly and flanks, the black line through the eye is paler and less distinct, and the angle of the inverted black "V" on the side is shallower.[2][4]
Its specific name honors the American ichthyologist Carl L. Hubbs (1894-1979), who had been intending to describe this species when he died and who in 1958 he was the co-describer of the related Northern scythemarked butterflyfish Prognathodes falcifer.[5]

Prognathodes carlhubbsi is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van koraalvlinders (Chaetodontidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1995 door Nalbant.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als Gevoelig, beoordelingsjaar 2009. De omvang van de populatie is volgens de IUCN stabiel.[1]

P. carlhubbsi là loài đặc hữu của quần đảo Galapagos (Ecuador), nơi mà mẫu vật của nó được lấy từ đảo Española ở độ sâu 30 m. Chúng cũng được tìm thấy ở đảo Malpelo (Colombia) và đảo Cocos (Costa Rica). Chúng thường sống xung quanh các rạn san hô và những bãi đá ngầm ở độ sâu 12 – 270 m[1][2].
Hiện tượng El Niño dẫn đến nước quá ấm và nghèo dinh dưỡng trong thời gian dài ở vùng nhiệt đới phía đông Thái Bình Dương, vì thế nó được liệt kê vào Loài sắp bị đe dọa[1].
P. carlhubbsi trưởng thành dài khoảng 12 cm. Chúng có hình dáng và màu sắc khá giống với Prognathodes falcifer. Thân có màu vàng xám với hai dải màu đen xếp thành chữ V ngược trên cơ thể. Dải đen này nằm sát các gai vây lưng hơn so với P. falcifer. Các sọc đen trên mắt và mũi của P. carlhubbsi cũng rõ rệt và sẫm màu hơn so với P. falcifer. Tất cả các vây đều có màu vàng xen lẫn màu den, riêng vây đuôi đen hoàn toàn; cuống đuôi vàng. Mõm nhọn[3].
Thức ăn của P. carlhubbsi chủ yếu là các loại động vật không xương sống tầng đáy và rong tảo. P. carlhubbsi trưởng thành có thể sống đơn độc hoặc bơi thành cặp vào mùa sinh sản[1][2].
P. carlhubbsi không được đánh bắt để phục vụ cho ngành thương mại cá cảnh vì chúng khó đánh bắt dưới vùng nước sâu[1].

本魚體側扁，吻突出且長，體略呈三角形，體色為銀白色為主，但頭部和背部為呈黃色。頭部有一黑色直條紋起自背鰭第一硬棘貫穿整個眼部並延伸至吻部。體側有一黑色粗大的倒「V」條紋，起自背鰭第三硬棘，一邊延伸至鰓蓋；一邊延伸至臀鰭軟條部。腹鰭和臀鰭硬棘部為黃色而軟條部為黑色，背鰭、尾鰭黑色。體長可達12.1公分。
本魚棲息於較深的礁石與峭壁區，少見。
可做為觀賞魚。
