Apogon dovii, also known by its common name tailspot cardinalfish, is a species from the genus Apogon.[2][3][4] The species was originally described by Albert Günther in 1861.[3]
A. dovii is a red fish with large black spot at the base of the tail fin. It can grow up to 10 cm (3.9 in) in length.[5] The height of the body is one-third of the total length and the length of the head is two-fifths of the total length. It has eyes of which the diameter is more than one-third of the length of the head.[2]
Despite differences in range does the A. dovii looks very similar to the Apogon imberbis, to the extent that Albert Günther suggested considering them the same when he originally described the species.
The species has been observed from Mexico to Panama.[6]

Apogon dovii is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van kardinaalbaarzen (Apogonidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1862 door Günther.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2008.[1]

本魚分布於東太平洋區，包括墨西哥、哥斯大黎加、瓜地馬拉、尼加拉瓜、宏都拉斯、巴拿馬、薩爾瓦多、秘魯、哥倫比亞、加拉巴哥群島、厄瓜多等海域。
本魚體延長而側扁，眼大，口大略下位。魚體呈紅褐色，從吻部至眼部有二淡色縱紋，並經過眼中間。側線明顯，尾柄有一黑色眼斑，尾鰭略凹，體長可達7.5公分。
本魚棲息於岩礁區，白天躲藏於岩縫中，夜間出來覓食，屬肉食性，以浮游生物為食。繁殖期時，雄魚具有口孵習性，卵約7日化成仔魚，由雄魚吐出，具短暫的仔魚飄浮期。
