The fish is named in honor of marine biologist Gerard M. Wellington of the University of Houston. It was he who assisted with the collection of the type specimens. [3]

Xyrichtys wellingtoni is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van lipvissen (Labridae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1995 door Allen & Robertson.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als Kwetsbaar, beoordelingsjaar 2007.[1]
