It also occurs along the whole coast of Brazil.[1] It lives in shallow waters over seagrass beds, mud banks, and floating algae, and can grow to a length of 10 cm. This species is ovoviviparous, with the male carrying eggs in a brood pouch until they are ready to hatch.[2]

Anarchopterus criniger is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van zeenaalden en zeepaardjes (Syngnathidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1884 door Bean & Dresel.
