Subopercle without indentation on posterodorsal margin; length of ventral fork of opercle 23.0–30.1% SL; ratio of lengths of dorsal and ventral forks of opercle 0.42–0.50.

A species of Oneirodes unique among its congeners in escal morphology. In addition, Oneirodes cristatus differs from all other species of the genus by having the following combination of character states: illicium length less than 35% SL, lower-jaw teeth 34–53, and pectoral-fin rays 13 or 14.
Oneirodes cristatus is known only from the Banda and Celebes Seas.
Probably meso- to bathypelagic. No conclusions can be made concerning vertical distribution.
